Cruises are open. Are you ready?

Yesterday, we were so excited to see a paddlewheel steamboat passing by our marina! We grabbed our phone in a hurry and ran out to take pictures. This Southern Belle was going fast!

American Countess plying the Tennessee River

After doing some research on the internet, we learned this is the American Countess.  American Queen Steamboat Company (AQSC) had refitted it from an old casino boat to create a brand new ship that debuted in March this year. You can read the details here.

Per the ship's itinerary, it left Memphis on Jun 8 for a 7-day cruise to Chattanooga, TN with stops at New Madrid (Missouri), Paducah (Kentucky), Savannah (Tennessee), Florence (Alabama), and Decatur (Alabama).  Last evening, it did an overnight cruise back to Memphis. No wonder it was flying last night, taking advantage of the calm river on this beautiful summer day.

We are not fond of the strong currents or commercial traffic on the Mississippi River, so we have not attempted to cruise on it. But, we love the history and stories of the river and towns that lined it. Perhaps we'll take a cruise on one of AQSC''s ships, from Memphis to New Orleans, one of these days.

Would you go on an American river cruise?

TN River is really pretty, wide and deep. Very easy to navigate and lots of wildlife and beautiful rocky mountains.

  2. I think I would really enjoy one of those river cruises but not yet. Until the pandemic is under control I won't be going on any cruises.

  3. I am ready to cruise to be honest, but I'll wait a few more months to do that. You know I've been dying to try these cruises but they are just beyond my price range.

  5. I'd love to go on a river cruise. Either here in the States or in Europe.
I had a friend who paddled a kayak the length of the Mississippi River from its headwaters to the Gulf of Mexico a couple years ago. He said navigating the river with currents, and big barge trains, was a challenge.

    1. We would love to go on a river cruise in Europe or do the one From Memphis to NOLA.

You friend sure is adventurous! Navigating the Mississippi is no easy feat, let alone on a kayak! Wonder how long it took him to do the whole length?
