Summer Weekend at Fort McRae Anchorage

Memorial Day, the last Monday of May, is a federal holiday to honor the men and women who sacrificed  their lives defending our country. The long weekend also traditionally marks the beginning of summer vacation.

One of our most memorable Memorial Day weekends was in 2006, when we stumbled upon a lovely anchorage - Fort McRae, near the Pensacola Inlet.

As we passed by the inlet, we sighted a number of boats packed in the anchorage. Apparently, boats rendezvous here to party. All night probably as they were setting up tents on the beach.

After we anchored, we took the dinghy out to explore. Party goers continue to arrive, and stake out a good place to anchor or tie up. Music and smell of barbecue wafted in the air. This place was buzzing all day long. Only a handful stayed the night. We had the beach all to ourselves the next morning.

Unforgettable memories indeed.
